Short answers to what people ask the most. Type a word to find it faster.

Getting started

Do I have to pay anything?

No. The app is free and so is the server. Each player only needs their own Project Zomboid on Steam.

Can my PC handle a server?

Most can. You need Windows 10 or 11 64-bit, about 7 GB free on the disk and enough memory: with 4 friends and a few mods, count on about 4.5 GB just for the server.

Work out the memory

Can I play on the same PC that runs the server?

Yes. Your game joins the server like everyone else's, with this PC's local IP. You just need more memory: about 6 GB more for the game.

Does the PC have to stay on?

Yes. The server runs on your PC: while it is off or asleep, nobody can join. The app can restart the server once a day at a set time, and warns the players first.

Install it or use portable mode?

“Install on this PC” adds a Start menu shortcut and an entry in Windows Apps, without asking for administrator. Portable mode keeps everything in a folder next to the .exe, good for a USB stick. Both do the same.

Do my friends need the app?

No. They join from the game with the address and port in the invite. The app only helps them check they have the same mods.

The server and the world

How many players can it take?

It depends on the PC's memory and your home internet. For a group of friends a normal PC is enough. You choose the maximum number of players when you create the server and can change it later.

Do I lose the world if the server goes down?

Usually not. The server saves the world every so often, and the app copies the world before each daily restart. In Server › World copies you make a copy now and put any one back.

Steam updated the game and my friends can't join anymore.

The server and the game must be on the same version. The app tells you when Steam updates the game: press Server › Install / update server and turn the server on again.

How do I make a friend admin, or kick someone?

With the server on, open Friends › Players. There you see who is inside and have buttons to kick, ban and make admin.

Does it work with Build 41 and Build 42?

Yes. You pick the game version when you create the server and the app shows only the Workshop mods made for it.

Mods

What are a Workshop ID and a Mod ID?

The Workshop ID is the item's number on the Steam Workshop (it tells the server what to download). The Mod ID is the name inside the mod (it tells the server what to switch on). One item can have several Mod IDs. The app finds both for you.

See the example in How it works

The server won't start after I added a mod.

In Mods, press “Check everything”: it shows missing, duplicated or out-of-order mods. “Sort by dependencies” fixes the order. If it still fails, remove the last mod you added or put back an older list in the History tab.

Do my friends have to subscribe to the mods?

Usually not: the game downloads the server's mods when they join. If one is missing, send them the modpack code (Friends › Network); anyone with the app sees what is missing in Settings › Help › Check my game.

Can I add a whole Workshop collection?

Yes. In the Workshop tab, open the collection and press “Import collection”. The mods they need come in too.

Friends and network

My friends can't get in.

Check in this order: is the server “On the air” (green)? Do they have the same game version and the same mods? Is the firewall rule created? If they play from outside your home, are the ports open on the router?

Guide: friends can't get in

Do I use the local IP or the public IP?

The local IP is for friends in the same home (or on a VPN such as Radmin VPN). The public IP is for friends outside, and then the ports must be open on the router.

Guide: opening ports on the router

Is it safe to share my IP?

Share it only with friends, in private. Anyone with your public IP knows where your home connection is. The app warns you before putting it in the invite, and the server always has a password.

Can I put the server on the game's public list?

Yes, when you create the server (the “Public” option). To play only with friends, leave it off. List or not, only people who know the password get in.

When something fails

Windows says the app might be dangerous.

That is SmartScreen: it shows up because the app is not digitally signed yet, not because something is wrong with it. Check the file's SHA-256 code and click “More info” › “Run anyway”.

See the SHA-256 code

My antivirus deleted or blocked the .exe.

It sometimes happens with new apps that are not signed (a false alarm). Download it again from this site, check the SHA-256 code and, if the antivirus insists, report the false alarm to it. When in doubt, ask in the Community.

Where do I see what went wrong, to ask for help?

In Server › Log file. When you ask for help in the Community, paste only the error lines and remove passwords and IPs.

How do I uninstall it?

From the app's Settings (Uninstall) or Windows Settings › Apps. You choose what to delete: the app, the data, the server. The game and Steam are left alone.

Privacy

Is this an official Project Zomboid app?

No. It is a free, unofficial fan project, not connected to The Indie Stone.

What does the app send over the internet?

Only what it needs: it downloads the server and the mods through Steam, reads public Workshop information and, if you ask, checks your public IP or whether there is a new version. It sends nothing about you.

Does this site collect data about me?

We do not store your IP or use cookies for visitors. Each person counts once: after the first visit your browser keeps only a “counted” mark. We also count downloads and the country. To avoid counting anyone twice on the same day, we use a temporary code that changes every day; the previous day’s codes are deleted. In the Community, signed-in people get an encrypted code of their IP, only so we can ban people who abuse it.

What does the Community sign-in keep?

Only your public Discord or GitHub name, your messages and an encrypted code of your IP (to ban people who abuse it). Never your password or e-mail. You can delete your account at any time.

Didn't find it?

Ask in the Community. Someone from the team or another player answers there, and the answer helps the next person too.
