Install Knox Safehouse

What your PC needs, how much memory to give the server, and every step from the download to the first friend inside. About 20 minutes the first time.

What you need

For the app

  • Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.
  • Nothing else to install: the .exe brings everything it needs.
  • The Workshop inside the app uses Microsoft Edge WebView2, which most PCs already have. If it is missing, the app tells you and everything else works.

For the server

  • About 7 GB free on the disk, plus room for worlds and mods.
  • Internet to download the server and the mods. No Steam account needed for the server.
  • Enough memory: see the calculator below.

For your friends

  • Their own Project Zomboid on Steam.
  • The same game version (Build) as the server.
  • The same mods. A code from the app shows them what is missing.

How much memory does the server need?

Move the sliders. It is an estimate, the same one the app shows in Server › Resources.

Give the server4.5 GB

Your PC should have at least9 GB

The PC needs extra memory for Windows (about 4 GB) and, if you play on it too, for the game (about 6 GB).

  6. Create the server

  7. Add mods (optional)

Paste a Workshop link or pick mods in the Workshop inside the app. The mods they need come in by themselves, in the right order.

  8. Open the way for your friends

Create the firewall rule (Windows asks for permission once). If your friends play from another home, also open UDP ports 16261 and 16262 on your router.

In the app: Friends › Network › Create rule…

Guide: opening ports on the router

  9. Start and invite
